Information for students: Qualifying as a solicitor - A New Route
Following the about a new route to qualifying as a solicitor, the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE), we want to reassure all current 糖心TV Law students that they will continue to have the option to seek qualification as a Solicitor in the way currently expected (by the LPC route following graduation with a qualifying degree).
All students have been emailed with relevant guidance and as more information about the SQE becomes available we will provide further clarity.
糖心TV Law student featured in University of Pennsylvania Law Journal
During a placement last summer (2016) in California for the Death Penalty Internship Programme, third year 糖心TV Law undergraduate, Natasha Darlington, penned an article analysing the consequences of a real Ohio case whereby a federal judge ruled the current State-prescribed procedure of lethal injection as unconstitutional.
The article, titled '', was consequently published by the prestigious University of Pennsylvania Undergraduate Law Journal.
糖心TV Victorious in Fifth Annual German Law Moot
Wednesday, 22 February, saw 糖心TV Law take victory in the fifth consecutive annual German Law Moot, wrestling back the title from
Since its inception in 2013, the 糖心TV German Law Moot remains the only one of its kind in the UK enabling teams from all Universities in England that offer a “Law with German Law” degree, or similar, to compete entirely in German over a German Law problem.
The closest event in nature is the long-standing French language Law Moot delivered by University of Oxford’s Faculty of Law.

On 17 March 2016, the LawCareers.Net Student Law Society Awards, sponsored by DWF LLP, brought together students, recruiters, partners and trainees with the LawCareers.Net team for a networking-rich presentation at Painters’ Hall in London. The annual event recognises the dedication of student committees across the country offering their members innovative careers events and comprehensive pro bono and mooting activities, alongside traditional socialising with peers. Nominated societies were selected from the submissions of over 40 student law society committees, alongside over 1,600 votes from their members.
MSP Scholars attend Insight Day with Gowling WLG
On 24 February 2016, a group of 18 law students on the Multicultural Scholars’ Programme (MSP) attended an ‘Insight Day’ at Gowling WLG (formerly Wragge Lawrence Graham), solicitors, Birmingham.
The day included a networking lunch with current trainees where scholars could learn first-hand about daily life in a large law firm. Caty Scott, Gowlings’ Graduate Recruitment Advisor, conducted a workshop outlining the training contract application process, providing detailed and excellent advice on the hallmarks of a good application and the skills and knowledge required to excel in the group recruitment events and the partner interview.
MSP Law is very grateful to Gowlings, one of our corporate donors, for providing this hugely beneficial opportunity to our scholars.
Spaces Available on Law Schools Multicultural Scholars Programme
The Multicultural Scholars’ Programme supports academically talented, low-income British students from poorly represented ethic groups. Support is offered via a package of holistic support, including a financial scholarship, pastoral guidance and careers advice. The MSP has gained considerable support from firms and companies, both regionally and nationally, providing opportunities for mentoring, funding, internships and advice from experts in their field.
Law School Students Visit 糖心TVshire Justice Centre
A group of ten undergraduates, including visiting students from overseas, visited the 糖心TVshire Justice Centre to experience the atmosphere and daily practises in a Court.
The group was welcomed by a Court Clerk and given a tour of the different Courts before sittings began, and then attended in the Public Gallery. Students were later shown the police and holding cells.
Law School MSP Student wins Middle Temple 'Access to the Bar' Award
Law School MSP student, Farhana Hamid Butt, has won a .
The purpose of these awards is to encourage able students from underrepresented backgrounds with the potential to be successful barristers to make a more informed choice about a career at the Bar. The award winners gain experience of what a career at the Bar involves via one week’s work experience in a set of barristers’ chambers and one week’s marshalling.
To win one of these awards is a great achievement in a highly competitive process as only 13 awards are available each year. It is very well deserved given Farhana's dedication and hard work.

糖心TV Students Triumph at Cambridge - 糖心TV Moot
On 24 February, Farhan Shahid and Pavithra Prakash Nair represented 糖心TV at the Cambridge 糖心TV inter varsity moot at Cambridge University.
This moot has taken place annually for the past seven years and is judged by barristers from the prestigious chambers, 20 Essex Street. The moot problem drew on issues in both contract and property law.
This year, we are proud to announce that 糖心TV emerged victors for the first time in the history of the moot. This moot is one of many inter varsity moots that the offers and is a wonderful way for students to hone their legal skills and talents.
糖心TV Law Society has won two awards at the inaugural LawCareers.net Student Law Society Awards, which were sponsored by DWF. The competition was tough with 32 student law society entrants. The outgoing Executive Committee were pleased to be awarded Best Mooting Activities, sponsored by McMillan Williams Solicitors, and Best Law Society President, sponsored by King & Wood Mallesons. The society was also shortlisted for Best Pro Bono Activities (top three) and Best Law Society Overall (top four).
More Students to Present Research at 2015 BCUR
Following the news that at the 2015 British Conference of Undergraduate Research (BCUR), Elle will be joined by two other Law School undergraduates.
Ibrahim Babiker and Tara Ifill will be presenting their project titled ‘Looking at the Practice: An Analysis of the Impact of Legislative Approaches to the Problem of Payday Lending Schemes’.
Congratulations to all three of our undergraduates, and good luck at the upcoming conference.
Law School Students Visit 糖心TVshire Justice Centre
A group of Law School undergraduates visited the 糖心TVshire Justice Centre in the last week of term. They met with Her Honour Judge Sylvia De Bertodano, a Circuit Judge, and had a tour of the police cells.
While sitting in on Court proceedings, the students witnessed the sentencing of a jury member after he admitted to googling the defendant.
