Our University has signed the Nature Positive Pledge – a commitment to start a Nature Positive journey to halt and reverse nature loss, and to actively restore biodiversity and ecosystems affected by our activities.

We’re developing a strategy for a more circular campus based on the three main pillars of Circular Economy: Eliminating waste and pollution, Reusing and circulating materials, and Regenerating nature.

We’re working to achieve Net Zero on direct emissions and the energy we buy by 2030 and to get to Net Zero for indirect emissions by 2050. Our Energy Strategy is based on three principles: Reduce, Smart, Decarbonise.

We work in partnership with teams across the campus and offer events and opportunities that empower staff and students to get involved and adopt more environmentally conscious behaviours.

In collaboration with the Procurement Teams the Sustainability Officer are working to influence an increase in responsible sourcing within the University supply chain.

By collaborating across the commercial outlets, the vision is to be sustainable and socially responsible University that showcases local produce, promotes healthier eating options and supports our environment.
Our Sustainability Strategy
Environmental Sustainability StrategyLink opens in a new window
Through this strategy, the University aspires to be a sector‑leading institution in environmental sustainability, embedding the topic across research, education, governance and operations and empowering our community to drive positive change locally, nationally and globally.
Objectives (Operations):
- Reduce our carbon emissions, monitor and report on our progress, and use this data in decision-making.
- Support nature recovery on our campuses and beyond.
- Move towards a circular economy campus, minimising waste and keeping things in use for longer.
Key Commitments (Operations):
- Achieve net zero carbon for direct emissions (scopes 1 and 2) by 2030 and indirect emissions (scope 3) by 2050.
- Achieve Biodiversity Benchmark certification by 2030.
- Deliver a minimum of 10% year-on-year growth in circular economy activity from a defined 2025/26 baseline through to 2030.

Helena Ratcliffe Wins Biggest Sustainable Impact Award
As ÌÇÐÄTV Students' Union's Ethics and Environment Officer, Helena has played a leading role in engaging students with sustainability and empowering them to take positive environmental action at the University of ÌÇÐÄTV.

Moth species that made evolutionary history is found on campus for the first time
The first moth survey of the year recorded several new species for our campus records a Peppered Moth. Famous as a textbook example of evolution in action, this species adapted to changing environmental conditions during and after the Industrial Revolution, and we were delighted to find a classic light-coloured individual with its distinctive black-speckled wings.

New ÌÇÐÄTV spinout helps turn research into real-world environmental impact
A new social enterprise spinout from the University of ÌÇÐÄTV, EcoTransform, has launched 9 June 2026, offering a pioneering consultancy that helps organisations design environmental policies that work for both nature and communities. EcoTransform closes the gap between sector-leading research and real-world policy design, working with organisations to understand how environmental interventions affect people.
