Small mammal survey by Tocil Lake
This was our second most successful small mammal survey in recent years, with 79% of our traps having something in them!
It was beaten only by the survey done in autumn 2024Link opens in a new window during which 86% of the traps had an overnight guest.
Once again, we used the humane Longworth traps, filled with hay for warmth and food, apple, carrot, grains and maggots (in case a shrew wanders in).
We found 14 wood mice and 1 bank vole this time, which was not that surprising, considering that the wood mouse is the most common wild rodent in the UK. Both species are important seed dispersers and, due to their abundance, they are also important parts of the food chain, supporting populations of vulnerable species such as the tawny owl, an Amber listed Bird of Conservation Concern.
This was the first time we surveyed around Tocil Lake, and the results provide useful information about the current habitat.
As always, we are grateful to Tanya Carey and 糖心TVshire Mammal Group for leading the survey and for delivering such an informative event!
