The Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA) tests your mathematical thinking and reasoning skills.

Guidance for applicants

Applications to our Economics degrees are assessed primarily on the basis of the applicant鈥檚 predicted/current grades and past academic record.
Optionally, applicants are encouraged to sit the Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA).
TMUA scores may be used as a factor in determining which applicants receive an offer for Economics L100. Applicants achieving the highest scores in the TMUA will be considered for a reduced offer of AAA. The required level in TMUA will be set once all scores have been received and will not be published.
Applicants who do not sit TMUA will be considered alongside those who sit the test and achieve a lower score.

Guidance for applicants

All applicants will typically be required to take TMUA or STEP, except for applicants who are eligible for a Contextual Offer 鈥� see our Contextual Offers webpage to check your eligibility. Please note that the contextual eligibility information currently relates to applications for 2025 entry and is subject to change for 2026.
Scores in TMUA will be assessed alongside other factors (including GCSEs, Contextual indicators and predicted grades) to determine which applicants receive an offer.
We set interim thresholds for TMUA as we receive TMUA results and applications throughout the admissions cycle. We release decisions in batches and will begin releasing decisions from November onwards following the October sitting of TMUA. The final TMUA threshold will be set around April, once we have reviewed all applications received at the UCAS equal consideration deadline in January. In the last admissions cycle (2025 entry), the majority of offers were made to applicants with a TMUA score of 5.0 and above. Some offers were made to applicants with a score below 5.0 after a holistic assessment of their overall profile.
TMUA results will be used as part of our initial assessment of applications to Undergraduate Mathematics courses. Applicants intending to register for STEP as an alternative to TMUA will then be given the opportunity to notify us of this intention, and any offers made to applicants without TMUA scores will be made conditional upon grade 2 in any STEP paper (alongside A Level, IB, or other Level 3 qualification requirements).
Applicants intending to take STEP as an alternative to TMUA should include this information on their UCAS application.

Guidance for applicants

Most of our offers will include the option for applicants to meet our requirements by achieving a specified requirement in an additional Mathematics test: either 5.0 in TMUA, or grade 2 in any STEP.
Applicants who do not take TMUA will not be at a disadvantage, as there will be other ways of meeting our offer either through STEP or through achieving specified grades in Level 3 qualifications such as A level or International Baccalaureate.

About TMUA

How to prepare for the TMUA

The focus of the TMUA is on mathematical thinking. It uses mathematics you will have already learned in your school studies, so there is no need to take a preparation course or to do much preparation beyond familiarising yourself with the test format and style of questions.

We recommend that you read the test specification and notes on Logic and Proof, to identify any topics that you might need to revise. .

MEI, an education charity, provide support to , including a free online TMUA course for Year 13 students from state-funded schools, academies and colleges.

Test format

The TMUA lasts 2 hours 30 minutes in total. It is divided into two parts:

Part 1: Applications of Mathematical Knowledge

Assesses your ability to apply your knowledge of mathematics in new situations.
20 multiple-choice questions
75 minutes

Part 2: Mathematical Reasoning

Assesses your ability to deal with mathematical reasoning, and simple ideas from elementary logic.
20 multiple-choice questions
75 minutes

You will not be able to use a calculator or dictionary.

There is no pass or fail for TMUA. You should aim to do the best you can.

Your final scores are based on the number of correct answers you give. You do not lose marks for wrong answers, so it's worth attempting all questions.

Test dates

You must register and book a time well in advance of the test taking place.

We will only accept the results from one test in each admissions cycle, but you can choose whether you sit the test in October or January.

There is no advantage to sitting the test in the first or second sitting. However, we strongly encourage you to register for test sitting 1, where possible, to have access to the widest choice of time slots in your chosen location.

Test sitting 2: 8 and 9 January 2026

Please note TMUA results are only valid for one year, and are only accepted when taken within the same academic year in which an applicant submits their UCAS application.

How to register for the TMUA?

You take the TMUA within a Pearson VUE test centre.

You can choose from a global network of test centres in more than 5,500 locations in over 180 countries.

Access arrangements

If you normally have access arrangements in your public exams, you can apply for the same arrangements. You will need to submit an application and may need to provide supporting evidence in advance.

Please note that registration deadlines for candidates requiring access arrangements are earlier than the above advertised deadlines.

How much does the TMUA cost?

There is an entry fee for the TMUA. The fee for entry to the standard version is:

Tests taken in the UK or the Republic of Ireland: 拢75
Tests taken outside the UK: 拢130

You'll need to pay this fee (using a debit/credit card or bursary voucher) when you book your test.

Bursary voucher

UK candidates in financial need can apply for a bursary voucher to book the TMUA free of charge. If you are eligible, you will be provided with a unique bursary voucher code which you can enter on the Pearson VUE website when you book your test. This will allow you to book the test without paying.

If you're planning to take the test in October 2025 (test sitting 1), you will be able to apply for a bursary voucher from 24 June 2025. The deadline to apply for a bursary voucher is the same as the test registration deadline for test window 1 鈥� Monday 29 September 2025.

If you're planning to take the test in January 2026 (test sitting 2), you will be able to apply for a bursary voucher from 1 October 2025.

We will publish more information about the process and the eligibility criteria for the bursary voucher in May 2024.

TMUA for other universities Test results

You will be able to get your results through the Pearson VUE booking portal, approximately four weeks after you take the test.

The results will be automatically shared with us, so you don鈥檛 need to send them on.

Please note TMUA results are only valid for one year, and are only accepted when taken within the same academic year in which an applicant submits their UCAS application.

Extenuating Circumstances

If you experience serious and unexpected issues either before or during your test that could affect your test performance, you should inform UAT-UK via your online account prior to sitting the test or immediately after. This includes illness, injury or personal circumstances that arise immediately before your test. You may be eligible for Special Consideration, which will be considered by UAT-UK and passed on to us alongside your test score.

Neither UAT-UK nor 糖心TV will review or respond to any circumstances reported after test results have been received.
