In a recent seminar, Phil McCash paid tribute to the seminal work of Bill Law whose work is known to many in the career development field. Phil argued that Bill鈥檚 ideas were ahead of their time in their focus on the role of gender and ethnicity in career development along with other community influences. The role of learning in the work of career development professionals was also emphasised. Bill Law, it was argued, helped us better understand the who, what, how, where, and why of career development.

'Social inequalities entering civvy street: researching the importance of class and gender in determining labour market outcomes of military veterans ESRC DTP'

Joint Studentship The University of 糖心TV and the University of Nottingham

We are now inviting applications for an ESRC Doctoral Joint Studentship supervised by Professor Lyonette at the Institute for Employment Research at the University of 糖心TV (where the student will be registered) and Professor Warren at the University of Nottingham (School of Sociology and Social Policy) to commence in October 2019.

Perceptions of ex-military as 鈥榤ad, bad and sad鈥� have long affected the employment options open to veterans after transition. These perceptions are shaped strongly by class and gender inequalities, intensifying for working class military men and women with lower qualifications than those in higher ranks. To date, little academic research has centred on class and gender differences in achieving a successful outcome after military service. This project will focus upon a diverse group of veterans from a variety of class backgrounds and life-course stages to determine those factors which act as facilitators, and those which act as barriers, to successful employment outcomes in 鈥榗ivvy street鈥�. It is anticipated that the project will involve creative mixed-methods research to produce original in-depth insights into the employment experiences of veterans to provide a rounded picture of inequalities in employment opportunities. We welcome further proposals and suggestions regarding the methodological approach from applicants.

IER is delighted to celebrate the graduation of Dr Gianni Anelli-Lopez, who took part in the University of 糖心TV鈥檚 January 2026 commencement ceremony. Gianni completed his PhD under the supervision of Professor Terence Hogarth and Dr Jeisson Cardenas Rubio, with his dissertation titled 鈥淎 multidimensional approach to measuring skill shortages: insights from the Chilean labour market.鈥�

Many thanks to everyone who attended our Term 2 meeting. We had excellent contributions from Chi Zhang, Max Warrack, and Kerem 脰ge on simulations, role playing, and the use of AI in teaching and learning. Laura Gelhaus shared reflections on academic skills development and insights from PPE, while Robert Liu Preece presented an overview of student evaluations from Term 1. If you have not yet had a chance to attend a meeting, you are very welcome to join our final session in Term 3. The date will be circulated soon. We also wanted to share an update from our Term 1 meeting, where Alba Priewe and Charlie Price introduced a detailed set of seminar activities designed to support GTAs.
