First compiled in 2004, QS World University Rankings were conceived to present a multi-faceted view of the relative strengths of the world's leading universities.

The research currently considers over 2,000 universities, and ranks over 700. The top 400 are ranked individually, whereas those placed 401 and over are ranked in groups.

Stephanie Esuola wins TARGETjobs Undergraduate of the Year Award. The award was sponsored by Mayer Brown and, through a series of online tests, application forms, interviews and assessment exercises, she emerged as winner. Stephanie is the first woman to win this award and she gets a fully paid place on Mayer Brown’s Summer Work Experience Programme and an iPad.

Mayer Brown only targeted a relatively small number of universities and so she beat off competition from other excellent students from other excellent universities. This award was one of twelve presented on the day and each award was sponsored by a top graduate recruiter: Barclays, Mars, Ernst & Young, Laing O’Rourke, E.ON, EDF Energy, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Rolls-Royce, Gazprom, Nestle and Mayer Brown.

Jonathan Garton has been appointed a Specialist Adviser to the House of Commons Public Administration Select Committee for its Inquiry on the Regulation of the Charitable Sector and the Charities Act 2006. Alan Norrie was one of only 38 academics to be elected a Fellow of the British Academy at its Annual General Meeting on 21 July. As a British Academy Fellow, Alan joins nearly 900 distinguished scholars who take a lead in representing the humanities and social sciences, facilitating international collaboration, providing an independent and authoritative source of advice, and contributing to public policy and debate.

James Harrison has just been awarded the 糖心TV Award for Teaching Excellence (WATE). As a result, he has been awarded the Butterworth Award for Teaching Excellence prize of £5,000.

The panel considering nominations for this year’s awards, felt that the evidence presented showed James's teaching and support of learning to be of an exceptional standard.

Lord Walker of Gestingthorpe will be judging the event.

The event will be held at Scarman House, Restaurant Room 1 (no longer M1 of the WBS Teaching Centre as previously stated) 

Everyone is welcome, the event is public. Please all come along.

There will be refreshments after the event finishes at about 8.00pm.
