CMP seminar - Modelling how antibiotics work: Rosalind Allen (Edinburgh)P5.23Understanding how antibiotics inhibit bacterial growth is important if we are design better treatment strategies to avoid the evolution of antibiotic resistance. However, there are surprisingly few models that describe the impact of antibiotics on bacterial physiology and growth. We have investigated how the richness of the nutrient medium affects the efficacy of action of ribosome-targeting antibiotics. We find apparently conflicting results: some ribosome targeting antibiotics work better on rich media while others work better on poor media. These results can be explained by a simple mathematical model. I will also describe preliminary results on the dynamical action of these antibiotics. |

The Centre for Earth Observation Instrumentation invites proposals for its call for proposals. This supports new and innovative ideas for earth technology developments. Funding will be provided for the following three themes: •new and innovative ideas for earth observation technology development, for which fast track grants are worth up to £200,000 over 15 months and pathfinder grants worth up to £75,000 over nine months; •achieving higher technology readiness level through airborne demonstration, for which flagship grants are worth up to £500,000 over 18 months; •development of EO cubesat flight model payloads aimed at potential commercial services, for which flagship grants are worth up to £500,000 over 18 months. UK HEIs, research organisations and organisations in industry may apply. Collaborative proposals involving industrial and other partners of all types are strongly encouraged. Teams that include partners new to space are particularly encouraged. |
