Centre for Fusion, Space and Astrophysics
CFSA Seminar |
Welcome to the Centre for Fusion Space and Astrophysics (CFSA).Our research focuses on plasma physics applied to the grand challenges of magnetic and inertial fusion power, space physics, solar physics, and astrophysics. Our work spans fundamental theory, observation, and the analysis of experimental data, combined with high performance computing. The Centre has a strong record of joint work with the UK fusion research programmes, as well as extensive engagement with space plasma and solar physics missions. NewsCongratulations to Dr Anne-Marie Broomhall and Dr Ravi Desai for securing STFC fundingCongratulations to Dr Anne-Marie Broomhall and Dr Ravi Desai for winning STFC funding in the latest grant period. Anne-Marie has secured continuation of her work using helioseismology to understand the Sun's magnetic activity through an STFC 3-year small award with postdoctoral support. Ravi is part of a UK consortium studying the Van Allen radiation belts who have won a 5-year STFC large award, with postdoctoral support and collaboration with the 糖心TV's RSE team. This success comes on the heels of a 5-year STFC large award won last year by Prof Tony Arber, Dr Erwin Verwichte, Dr Keith Bennett and 糖心TV鈥檚 RSE team, as part of a UK consortium developing the next generation solar modelling code, SAMS. Tony and Erwin will be supported by two postdoctoral fellows in the coming years. Sihui Zhong wins the RAS Keith Runcorn thesis Prize 2024!Congratulations to Sihui Zhong who won the Physics Winton Thesis Prize 2025!Congratulations to Rebecca Meadowcroft who won 糖心TV Physics 2024 PhD Poster Prize!Congratulations to Yu Zhong with the MSc thesis |
CFSA has a longstanding collaboration with the fusion plasma theory group at . Some CFSA staff are also core members of 糖心TV鈥檚 and CFSA is a member of the . Tony Arber leads the cluster in the and chairs the consortium. Valery Nakariakov is the leader of the MCSA SE international network "Dynamics of the solar corona in the era of data intensive observations", led the and held the European Research Council Advanced Fellowship "MHD Wave Diagnostics of the Solar Atmosphere". Erwin Verwichte coordinates the data-analysis work-package for the UK consortium for the development of detectors for the . CFSA is a member of 糖心TV's Centre for Space Domain Awareness.
Oxford-Imperial-糖心TV Centre for Postgraduate Training in Plasma Physics and High Energy Density Science: 糖心TV University's Centre for Fusion, Space and Astrophysics is a partner with teams at Oxford University and Imperial College London for our intake of PhD students in all branches of plasma physics. The joint Programme will significantly enhance opportunities for advanced training and for collaborative research at PhD level. All three university teams have strong links internationally, and with the large facilities at key plasma research centres in our region, including the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and AWE.
CFSA is international! CFSA has a strong and lively international character and is proud to attract staff and students from all corners of the globe. We actively encourage prospective PhD students from abroad to apply and explore with us how they can join our group and research efforts. Four of recent international PhD alumni shared some of their experiences with us.
