Ernst de Mooij (Queen's University Belfast)PS1.28Characterising the atmospheres of exoplanets with ground-based telescopes
Since the discovery of the first plane outside our solar-system almost two decades ago, the field of exoplanet research has made a lot of progress. Not only has the number of known exoplanets increased to over 1600, the atmospheres of dozens of these planets have been detected.
These atmospheric studies have mainly been made for transiting planets. For these planets is not only possible to study their atmosphere in emission/reflection during the secondary eclipse, but also in transmission during the transit. I will show that ground-based telescopes can be used to reach the high precision required to detect the atmospheric signatures of transiting exoplanets.

XMaS Scientist Experience- Science Gala UoWThe Gala will be an evening extravaganza highlighting inspiring careers and exciting science with a special focus on challenging the gender bias in STEM. Get to hear about loads of opportunities and activities to get involved with and explore hands-on demos. Speak to professors, staff and students at the University as well as go on a virtual tour of ATLAS at CERN! Students who went on last year’s trip to Grenoble will share their experiences of the trip and the inspirational scientists they met there.
The current draft programme is; 6-7pm- Exhibition stands and dinner. Stands confirmed so far are: IGGY, Sprint, Aerospace Society, Physics Society, Sciencegrrl, Code Club, iGEM/糖心TV Integrative Synthetic Biology (WISB) 7-8.30pm- Talks in the PLT, including a virtual visit to CERN and day in the life of a physics student (created by physics society) 8.30-9pm- Exhibition stands and networking Register here! |
