The individual elements of your degree are known as modules. Each module has a different focus.

All first year undergraduates in the School of Engineering share a common curriculum of core modules. There are no optional modules during your first year.

There are no optional modules for either degree apprenticeship in Year 1.

BEng Civil and Infrastructure Engineering Degree Apprenticeship (CEDA)

In Year 1, face-to-face teaching will be delivered through seven one-week sessions by ÌÇÐÄTV academic staff, with collaborative teaching support from employers.

Year 1 (75 credits; five 15 credit Level 4 modules)

Electromechanical Engineering Degree Apprenticeship (EMDA)

In Year 1, face-to-face teaching will be delivered through six one-week sessions by ÌÇÐÄTV academic staff, with collaborative teaching support from employers.

Whilst there is no official reading list for any of our Engineering courses, some of our current students and recent alumni have put together a list of resources that helped them.

Tutorials in the School of Engineering take place in tutor groups (typically 6-8 students).

Tutorials typically take place:

• Undergraduate students: weekly during term time, usually on a Wednesday morning. These sessions will be timetabled in Tabula.
• Degree Apprenticeship students:

  once every other teaching block for tutorials - usually on a Wednesday afternoon - and once every 12 weeks for tripartite meetings alongside your line manager.

• Postgraduate Taught students: more information will be communicated during Welcome Week.

Tutorials are designed to:

• help you to get the most out of lectures, seminars, practicals and the library;
• organise and write essays and practical reports;
• explain the various assessment procedures;
• generally to discuss all aspects of the course in an informal setting.

Your Personal Tutor is also there to help you with any problems which may arise throughout your time at ÌÇÐÄTV, so you are free to arrange additional meetings with them as required.

Student Handbooks for your year of entry will be made available by the start of term if they are not uploaded at present.

The Library is available 24 hours for all students to use as needed. You can find a huge variety of resources, both online and in-person. All your required course reading will be available from the library.

Email: both the University and the department will communicate with you on your new ÌÇÐÄTV email address (available once you've completed your enrolment).Make sure you check this account regularly!

MYWARWICK: you will have your own personalised 'My ÌÇÐÄTV' account. This is where you'll be able to access your university emails, timetable, campus information and much more.

Tabula: an online system you will use to see your timetable and coursework deadlines, electronically submit assignments, and download marking feedback. Full details and support will be provided once you arrive.

Moodle: a learning management system (think of it as a digital learning hub) where you will access - on a module by module basis - coursework materials, lecture capture recordings, assignment briefing sheets etc. There are also Moodle courses for training and information that sit outside the curriculum - the is one such example.

Engineering IT Software, Systems, & Facilities: the School of Engineering has several student computing laboratories with specialist software.

Additionally, our Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) allows you to access the School of Engineering's computing resources remotely, providing a similar experience to using a physical computer on campus.

Students can expect to access their course timetable via Tabula by the end of Welcome Week.

Who is my Personal Tutor?

• Each student is allocated a Personal Tutor at ÌÇÐÄTV. Usually, this is a member of the academic staff in your department.
• Engineering students will find out who their personal tutor is via Tabula during Welcome Week.

What is their role?

• Your Personal Tutor is your first point of contact within the department to discuss any issues that arise, whether pastoral or academic.
• You can draw on their experience and expertise as and when you need – they are your ongoing individual face-to-face relationship within the department and are here to support you throughout your time at ÌÇÐÄTV.
• They are also the most obvious person to provide references for you after you graduate, so it is worthwhile investing time into developing a strong working relationship.

When will we meet?

• Undergraduate students: weekly during term time, usually on a Wednesday morning. These sessions will be timetabled in Tabula.
• Degree Apprenticeship students: once every other teaching block for tutorials - usually on a Wednesday afternoon - and once every 12 weeks for tripartite meetings alongside your line manager.

Senior Tutor

The School of Engineering's Senior Tutor, Dr Gary Fowmes, promotes the academic welfare of students, individually and collectively. He is also the school’s primary disability contact.

Gary is responsible for the personal tutoring system within the School of Engineering, ensuring that the School implements University guidelines for Personal Tutors.

Gary is a sympathetic person to whom students can turn in confidence regarding difficulties in their studies. Gary also acts as the link between the School of Engineering and the University’s Wellbeing Support.

Deputy Senior Tutors

Nigel Denton and Cate Anthony are the Deputy Senior Tutors in the School of Engineering. Nigel and Cate support Gary and the wider personal tutor team in their duties as outlined above.

Head of Department: Professor James Covington

Professor James Covington is the School of Engineering’s Head of Department. The Head of Department has overall responsibility through the University Senate to the Council of the University, for the leadership and management of their department and for its coordination, including undergraduate matters.

Heads of Education and Student Experience: Dr Elia Gironacci and Dr Thomas Popham

Dr Elia Gironacci and Dr Thomas Popham are the School’s co-Heads of Education and Student Experience. The Heads of Education and Student Experience are responsible for the Taught Degree Programmes run by the School and for leading and co-ordinating teaching activity within the school. The Heads of Education and Student Experience are also responsible for co-ordinating activity with partner departments including WMG, Computer Science and ÌÇÐÄTV ÌÇÐÄTV School.

Head of Research: Professor Layi Alatise

Professor Layi Alatise is the School’s Head of Research and Deputy Head of Department. The Head of Research is responsible for co-ordinating the school’s research portfolio.

Director of Operations: Amy Hamson

Amy Hamson is the School’s Director of Operations. The Director of Operations is responsible for managing professional support services across the breadth of activity that the School undertakes including teaching, research, finance, HR, IT, and technical services.

Director of Student Experience: Amanda Lang

The Director of Student Experience, Amanda Lang, is responsible for working with students to enhance the student experience. Amanda works closely with the Schools’ Student Staff Liaison Committees and she is always keen to hear students’ views and feedback. Talk to Amanda if you have any ideas about how you would like to improve your course or our department, build a stronger community between students and staff, or enhance student support.

Directors of UG Studies: Thomas Popham & Mohammad Al-Amin

Thomas and Mohammad are the joint Directors of UG Studies. They have responsibility for individual Course Managers at undergraduate level, and the staff who deliver teaching and learning on these courses.

Director of Skills, Industry Training and Apprenticeships: Elia Gironacci

Elia is the Director of Skills, Industry Training and Apprenticeships. He has responsibility for degree apprenticeship provision within the School, and the development of key skills and industry readiness across all of our degree programmes.

The School of Engineering is supported by Kelly Coles, Senior Careers Consultant.

Kelly is responsible for delivering the careers content in modules and careers workshops that help you to understand your options, prepare for making applications, develop your employability skills and self-awareness. Please ensure you make use of all the in curriculum content and careers workshops as these have been designed to help you progress in your career throughout your degree.

DA Students

Degree Apprenticeship students are supported by Jo Pearson, Senior Careers Consultant.

The central Skills team helps ensure all ÌÇÐÄTV students are ready for life after graduation - and equipped with the skills they need for a successful future.

They run programmes and interventions that give students opportunities and support for recognising, developing, reflecting on, and articulating their full range of skills.

SSLC stands for Student-Staff Liaison Committee. There are SSLCs in each department in the University that feed into both the Students' Union and the University administration.

SSLCs are committees made up of elected student representatives and members of staff. They are student-led and provide an area for students and staff to discuss ideas and solve problems connected with teaching, learning and student support.

If you're interested in the work of the SSLC, or have an issue you would like to be discussed, you should speak with one of your Course Representatives. If you have questions about the running of the SSLC, you should speak with the SSLC Chair.
