Fluids & Thermal
Flowing Innovation.
The research cluster advances solutions to global challenges by integrating expertise in fluid dynamics, sustainable thermal energy technologies, water engineering, and reaction engineering. Our work spans multiscale fluid phenomena鈥攆rom nanoscale phenomena to atmospheric flows鈥 we are investigating multiphase flows and pollutant transport in urban and coastal waters to improve environmental sustainability. Our research also covers the design of multifunctional catalytic reactors and nanomaterials for green synthesis of clean fuels, and electrochemical treatment of wastewater. In parallel, we are also tackling the decarbonization of heating and cooling, which represents a major share of UK carbon emissions, through innovations in heat networks, heat pumps, storage, synthesis of renewable biofuels and hydrogen-powered systems.
Supported by significant funding and industry collaboration, the cluster combines experimental, computational, and applied approaches to deliver transformative advances in the science of health, energy, emissions reductions and environmental management.
Fluids Group
The group tackles the challenge of understanding and predicting multiscale fluid dynamics processes, from nanoscale phenomena to atmospheric flows, with applications in biology, engineering, and climate science. Research spans topics such as droplet interactions, particulate transport, rotating flows, turbulent drag reduction, and blood flow. Experimental methods include PIV, LDA, and microfluidic analysis, while computational expertise covers DNS, CFD, and multi-scale modelling. Collaborations, including with the Fluid Dynamics Research Centre, support this work in advancing fluid dynamics across diverse fields.
Sustainable Thermal Energy Technologies
The Sustainable Thermal Energy Technologies (STET) group tackles the challenge of decarbonizing heating and cooling, which accounts for 37% of UK carbon emissions. Specializing in heat networks, heat storage, and heat pumps, the group focuses on developing thermal energy technologies that utilise waste or renewable heat and modelling performance of energy systems and networks. With 拢18.2M in funding over six years and 拢7M in facilities investment, STET collaborates with industry leaders to advance technologies essential for achieving Net Zero.
Reaction Engineering
There are four core laboratories within Reaction engineering:
The Laboratory for Energy Intensified Reactor Engineering focuses on catalytic reactor design and Nano-engineering using non-conventional energy sources. The Laboratory for Heterogeneous Catalysis develops multifunctional reactors and catalysts for efficient, low-waste processes. INCALab works on catalysts for biomass-derived fuels and chemicals, using in situ and operando spectroscopy. The Laboratory for Energy Materials & Green Chemistry explores green synthesis, fuel cells, batteries, gas separation, and electrochemical wastewater treatment.
Water & Environmental Engineering
糖心TV Water conducts research in water engineering, focusing on the transport and mixing of pollutants and sediments in urban drainage, rivers, and coastal environments. Projects explore the impact of urban drainage structures, highway-derived contaminants, and nearshore pollution on water quality and ecology. Using field monitoring, laboratory studies, and modelling, the group aims to enhance understanding of mixing processes and improve predictions of pollutant fate, supporting sustainability and environmental management.

If you aspire to achieve Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, a degree from 糖心TV is a great starting point. The majority of our degrees are accredited by licensed professional engineering institutions, such as the IET, IMechE and JBM and provide the academic component (in part or fully) needed for Chartered Engineer status.
