Dr Claire Rocks

Claire is an Reader in the Department of Computer Science and has the role of Deputy Head of Department (Teaching) and Director of Undergraduate Studies. She also leads the Computer Science Education Research Group.

Claire teaches a broad range of modules including Mobile Robotics and Responsible Computing. She is also a co-convenor for an Institute for Advanced Teaching and Learning (IATL) module, Creating Digital Futures - this module offers ÌÇÐÄTV students the opportunity to work in diverse interdisciplinary teams in response to a digital innovation competition brief set by ÌÇÐÄTV’s incubator ‘Creative Features’ in partnership with the Student Enterprise Fund. Claire is also a WIHEA Alumni and WIE Foundation Fellow.

Claire is a member of the Department's outreach team and was Co-Investigator on Play Code Share - a project that brings together Computer Science and the Arts to teach computing in a creative and playful way. She is currently leading the Department's involvement with - a flagship national initiative led by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT.

Claire was awarded a PhD in Space Robotics in 2006 from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. As part of her research she worked on the Beagle 2 Mars Lander, and took part in many outreach activities including Research Councils UK (RCUK)’s Researchers in Residence programme and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)’s NOISE scheme. Claire even appeared twice on Channel 4’s Scrapheap Challenge Road Show.

Following her PhD Claire managed the EPSRC-funded project Walking with Robots. She has also previously worked with the Bloodhound LSR team and managed , an international competition to identify, train and mentor researchers and aspiring science communicators wishing to engage public audiences with their work. During this time she worked closely with both the British Council and NASA.
