My experiences as an autistic student: Ruhi’s Story

The School for Cross-faculty Studies at the University of ÌÇÐÄTV is proud to be part of a diverse and inclusive community of staff and students. Our community includes many neurodivergent individuals across the spectrum, whose different perspectives, strengths, and ways of thinking enrich our learning environment and strengthen the collaborative work we do. To mark Neurodiversity Celebration Week, we spoke to one of these neurodivergent community members Ruhi - a first year GSD and Life Sciences student - about living with autism, and how the Higher Education sector still has a way to go to support neurodivergent individuals.

SCFS celebrates Winter Graduation 2026 with first PhD graduate and OSCA Winner

In January, SCFS celebrated the Winter graduation of our GSD MASc students, in addition to several of our GSD and Liberal Arts undergraduates and our first ever PhD graduate.
The graduation ceremony took place at Butterworth Hall on the main ÌÇÐÄTV campus and was followed by a food and drinks reception in the lobby of Ramphal, a location where our School predominantly resides and has become all too familiar for our graduates during their degree studies.

GSD Assistant Professor publishes new article in leading international journal

Dr Elizabeth Chant, an Assistant Professor in the Global Sustainable Development department, has published a new article, co-authored with her colleague Dr Natalia Gándara Chacana (Pontificia Universidad Católica de ValparaÃso), that examines the depiction of natural environments in historic British travel accounts.

How my GSD MASc got me to where I am: Ben’s Story

In this blog series, we sit down with some of our GSD Masters alumni to discuss their experiences of the course and some of the ways studying GSD has helped benefit their career. Ben graduated from our MASc course in 2025 after initially studying History for his undergraduate degree. He currently works in the Global Investments and Innovations Incentives team at Deloitte and credits his interdisciplinary studies with helping him succeed in the world of tax consulting. Dr Hita Unnikrishnan Publishes Poetic Reflections from the Frontlines of Community Energy in East Africa

Dr Hita Unnikrishnan, an assistant professor for the Institute for Global Sustainable Development, has published a collection of poems inspired by her community energy work across Ethiopia, Malawi, and Mozambique. Her poetic chapter appears in the open-access volume Intersectional Climate Justice in Eastern Africa, which is freely available online.

New study by GSD Teaching Fellow examines abandoned fishing gear and its impact on coastal livelihoods in Cameroon

Maurice Beseng has published a new open-access article in the leading peer-reviewed journal Marine Policy, which is published by Elsevier.
The article, titled ‘, explores the growing global challenge posed by abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear, and its contribution to multiple sustainability challenges including plastic pollution, damage to marine ecosystems, and threats to coastal livelihoods and food security.

The School for Cross-faculty Studies welcomed ÌÇÐÄTV staff and students to a vibrant and well-attended Work Placement Fair 2025 on campus this week.
Organised by Bodrun Nahar – the School’s Employability and Work Placements Manager - the fair showcased the breadth of placement pathways available to students across Global Sustainable Development (GSD), Design Studies, and Liberal Arts.
