Ismaeel Mahmood

Research Support Coordinator (Grants & Contracts)

My role is rewarding because I know I'm actively contributing to University research, and that could make a big difference in the world.

My role is Research Support Coordinator (Grants & Contracts) in R&IS. I mainly support WMG, but also assist other departments such as Computer Science and Engineering from time to time.

A big part of my role is managing research contracts and supporting academics to start negotiations with industry partners or other HEIs. I ensure that Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) are set up and that the terms are beneficial for the University.

That鈥檚 a big part that I can take off the academic鈥檚 shoulders, leaving them to get on with what they need to do.

We also make sure that any business partner is a suitable fit before any research is started. We carry out due diligence checks - looking for any controversial connections or issues that would raise a red flag. Again, that can be a very long process but it鈥檚 crucial. It鈥檚 all done to protect the University and the reputation of who we work with. It鈥檚 not as simple as just doing a Google search!

Working with PGR students in WMG

I鈥檝e had quite a varied career before starting at the University. I鈥檝e done all sorts, Customer Service in a contact centre, retail, warehouses and supply chain for car parts. I also went to Coventry University and got my bachelor鈥檚 degree there.

I started at the University around three years ago in WMG, working with PGR students helping get them into the PhD courses.

Then a role came up in R&IS and I鈥檇 heard great things about the team and work they do, so jumped at the opportunity. It鈥檚 a really supportive team and we help each other out when we can.

Life outside of the University

I鈥檝e just bought a house, although I鈥檓 not that great at DIY but I鈥檓 giving it a go and learning new skills as I go. That鈥檚 where all my time is going now, but I do like to socialise with family and friends as well when I can.

I did a bit of amateur boxing as well when I was younger, not so much now but I still enjoy watching boxing, martial arts, MMA etc.

It was a huge commitment at the time to keep the right fitness levels, but it also kept me grounded and taught me some very important life skills.
