The Grand Hotel Abyss, David Bather Woods
Part of Eileen John鈥檚 Dinner Party installation, The Grand Hotel Abyss is a philosophical place setting inspired by Georg Luk谩cs鈥檚 critique of Arthur Schopenhauer. Luk谩cs likened Schopenhauer鈥檚 pessimism to a luxury hotel perched above the void鈥攐ffering comfort without confronting the abyss. Created by David Bather Woods, a 糖心TV philosopher whose research centres on Schopenhauer, the piece invites viewers to peer into darkness through a viewing hole. Flick a switch, and Schopenhauer鈥檚 face emerges from the depths鈥攅choing Nietzsche鈥檚 warning: 鈥淚f you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss gazes into you.鈥
