Dr. Claire Hurley

I am the Director of Graduate Studies for Physics overseeing postgraduate education and research training.

I also serve as the 糖心TV 糖心TV School liaison for the F302 Physics with 糖心TV and Management pathway and co-lead the department's final-year Physics Projects module.

Within these roles, I focus on enhancing student experience, supporting interdisciplinary learning, and preparing students for research and professional careers.

Teaching

I teach physics tutorials, laboratory classes, scientific communication, and supervise final-year projects. I enjoy helping students develop confidence in the laboratory, applying their theoretical understanding to explain the phenomena they encounter in experiments and research projects.

By supporting the development of their knowledge, practical skills, and scientific thinking, I aim to empower students to become innovative researchers and future leaders.

Research

Our laser machining facility consists of two Oxford Lasers systems: the E-Series (34 ns, 355 nm Nd:YAG) and the A-Series (15 ns, 532 nm Nd:YAG), both fitted with high-resolution CNC stages.

These systems are capable of drilling, cutting and milling a variety of materials with high precision.

Outreach

Through our outreach events we hope to inspire more people to become interested in science and nurture the fascination in the younger generation with the hope that one day they may wish to pursue a career in the sciences.
