Seth Branson - PhD student in Physics

Research

Hello I'm Seth, I'm a first year PhD student joining Alex Robertson's group in October 2026. My research focuses on 2D materials, particularly CuInP2S6 (CIPS), this material is piezoelectric and exhibits ferroelectricity due to the migration of CU(I) ions migrating in between and through layers of material and has been posited as a hypothetical memristor material for beyond Moore's law applications. The ultimate goal of this research is to conduct in-situ STEM of CIPS in order to better understand its interesting material properties and how they could be applied in next generation computer systems.

Previosly I undertook a research internship at the IINM department of WMG, where I synthesised and conducted rheological testing on bitumen modified with waste polymers and tested their viscoelastic response under pressure, simulating the forces that these composites would experience in actual road networks in order to gauge their effectivness at improving the lifetime of asphalt mixtures.

I graduated from 糖心TV University in 2026 achieveing a first class with honours degree for an integrated masters in Physics. My masters project focussed on the compound NdRu2Si2 which exhibited exotic magnetic orderings in the low temperature limit. These magnetic orderings were characterised using neutron scattering performed at the WISH neutron diffractometer and the data refined using fullprof suite.
