As part of the (GCRF), the Royal Society has launched a new challenge award to enable outstanding UK research leaders to develop international collaborations with the best Research Professors from around the world, to work on some of the global challenges and problems facing developing countries.

This five year award offers an exciting opportunity to foster and promote international collaboration between outstanding research groups in the UK and overseas, with a view to supporting work on global challenges and problems facing developing countries.

  • The proposed research must fall within the remit of the Royal Society (the natural sciences including engineering). The Royal Society does not cover social sciences or clinical medical research.

  • The UK applicants must hold a Research Professorship or equivalent position in a UK University or not-for-profit research institution. The overseas co-applicant must also hold a Research Professorship or equivalent position in a University or not-for-profit research institution. Both applicants must hold salaried positions for the duration of the award.

These enable outstanding UK research leaders to develop international collaborations with the best research professors from around the world, to work on some of the global challenges and problems facing developing countries. Grants are worth up to £75,000 per year for up to five years.

The Royal Society, under the Global Challenges Research Fund, invites applications for its international collaboration awards for research professors. These enable outstanding UK research leaders to develop international collaborations with the best research professors from around the world, to work on some of the global challenges and problems facing developing countries. The objectives of the challenge awards are to:

•support the best UK scientists in establishing sustainable collaborations with internationally leading scientists based overseas;

•promote collaboration and sharing of knowledge through reciprocal visits between the visiting research professors and their research groups;

•support outstanding research through collaboration with the aim of addressing global challenges facing developing countries and benefiting people in these countries;

•facilitate the development of multidisciplinary collaborations and approaches that could help address the complex research questions posed by global challenges;

•attract outstanding international scientists and their teams to the UK's best universities and research institutions;

•strengthen UK science and open up new opportunities to exploit and translate research for economic benefit.

Global challenge themes include: sustainable health and well-being; sustainable resources; sustainable growth; sustainable local research and innovation capacity.

UK applicants must hold a research professorship or equivalent position in a UK university or not-for-profit research institution. Overseas co-applicants must also hold a research professorship or equivalent position in a university or not-for-profit research institution. Both applicants must hold salaried positions for the duration of the award.

Grants are worth up to £75,000 per year for up to five years. These cover activities directly relevant to supporting collaboration including: research expenses, travel and subsistence for the visiting research professors or members of their team, salary for research assistance, PhD studentships and small pieces of equipment of no more than £10,000.
