Physics day: 'Physics of Living Systems'Centre for Complexity Science (D1.07)The tools of soft matter physics have long been used to provide insight into cell biology, and have been incredibly successful at describing many phenomenological features, such as the shape of red blood cells and defect formation in epiphelia. However, as experimental techniques become more precise and quantitative the need to extend such theories has become apparent. Biological systems are inherently out of equilibrium, and have been shown to break the fluctuation dissipation theorem due to their 鈥渁ctive鈥 consumption of energy. They are also highly molecule specific and the details of chemical reactions underlying the regulation of mechanical processes can be very important in trying to understand the dynamics of these systems. As such, new 鈥渁ctive鈥 and mechano-chemical theories of living matter are required in order to explain phenomena. Such theories are not only useful as models for biological processes, but have been shown to display interesting new physics in their own right. The aim of this meeting is to bring together a wide range of researchers to address contemporary questions on the physics of living systems, with a focus on the interplay between theory and experiment. |

The UK Space Agency, invites proposals for its national space technology programme – exploration technology development call. This supports space technology research and development projects that will further the UK鈥檚 ability to exploit the opportunities offered by the UK鈥檚 participation in the European Space Agency鈥檚 exploration programme over the period 2020 to 2022. The aim is to develop the capability of the UK space sector in technology relevant to robotic and human exploration of low earth orbit, the lunar vicinity and lunar surface, and Mars, in order to position the UK community to secure the maximum scientific and technological return from the future exploration projects and programmes. Projects are sought in areas including: 鈥arly technology readiness level innovation; 鈥echnology proof of concept; 鈥echnology development; 鈥volution of technology for new markets; 鈥stablishing new industrial research collaborations; 鈥evelopment of spin in or out of technologies for space. Projects should have strong enabling potential for future space exploration activities. Projects that develop instrumentation for commercial applications are also encourage. UK HEIs, other research organisations, SMEs and industry may apply. Industrial-academic teams are encouraged. Industrial co-funding may be required. The total budget is worth up to 拢100,000 to support between one and three projects. |

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, with support from the Institute of Physics and the Royal Society of Chemistry, invites expressions of interest for its showcasing physical sciences impact event 2019. This enables researchers to produce an exhibit of their physical sciences research to display at the showcasing physical sciences impact event, to be held on 6 December 2019. The event will include plenary talks, a keynote speech and exhibits demonstrating physical sciences impact, and panel sessions focussing on economic, social and cultural impact, impact through knowledge and impact through people. Exhibits will: 鈥elp the EPSRC make the case and advocate for maintaining a healthy physical sciences research base; 鈥e an opportunity to showcase research and its varied impact to a range of stakeholders including senior leaders within UKRI; 鈥emonstrate importance of fundamental physical sciences research to industry and policy makers and how this provides the foundations for applied research and innovation. EPSRC-funded researchers may apply. This may include PIs, co-investigators, postdoctoral researchers, collaborators, research technical professional or project-partner. A total of 10 to 15 exhibitions are sought. |
