Chris Brady (糖心TV): Heating of the solar chromosphere by Alfven waves

Abstract : It has been known for many years that the lower chromosphere can be heated by the shock dissipation of acoustic waves. They can not be responsible for heating the upper chromosphere though because the energy is completely dissipated lower down. Various mechanisms for heating the upper chromosphere have been proposed, and many of them use Alfven waves as the mechanism to carry energy into the upper chromosphere. The question is how the energy is dissipated. Based on high resolution 2D MHD simulations the possible dissipation mechanisms are considered, coming to the conclusion that the primary heating mechanism is likely to be the dissipation of ponderomotively generated slow shocks.

Rolling Deadline

The Science and Technology Facilities Council invites applications for its new applicants scheme. This aims to provide newly appointed academic members of staff the opportunity to obtain research funding in the areas of experimental and theoretical particle physics, and certain aspects of astrophysics between grant reviews. This may allow them to begin to establish a research programme on appointment.

Applicants must be employed as a full- or part-time academic member of staff at the grant holding university by the start date of the new applicants grant, must be the sole investigator, and they may not be funded on more than one grant.

Funding covers a period of between one and three years.

EPSRC and the Knowledge Transfer Network are supporting an independent review of knowledge exchange in the mathematical sciences to be chaired by Professor Philip Bond. The aim of the review is to establish a roadmap for knowledge exchange in the mathematical sciences to inform the community of practitioners and users, funders and government.

The steering committee of the review are accepting Expressions of Interest for membership of the review panel. The role of the panel will be:

  • To collect evidence from UK Higher Education Institutes (HEIs), funders, knowledge exchange experts, learned societies and research users, both in the public and private sector, on the current state of knowledge exchange in the mathematical sciences;
  • to seek examples of best practice for mathematical sciences knowledge exchange from within and outside of the UK;
  • to consider and review models of support, incentivising, promoting and providing governance of knowledge exchange activities for the mathematical sciences;
  • to explore similarities and differences in the operation of knowledge exchange in the mathematical sciences in comparison with other STEM subjects;
  • to establish a roadmap for knowledge exchange in the mathematical sciences and to make recommendations to stakeholders;
  • to disseminate findings widely and to summarise these findings in a public report.

The Royal Society and the Taiwan Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) invite applications for the cost-share programme of their international exchanges scheme. This programme stimulates new collaborations within the natural sciences between scientists in the UK and Taiwan. Eligible research subjects include the following: physics; chemistry; mathematics; computer science; engineering; agricultural, biological and medical research; the scientific aspects of archaeology, geography and experimental psychology.
