How do I use this calendar?

You can click on an event to display further information about it.

The toolbar above the calendar has buttons to view different events. Use the left and right arrow icons to view events in the past and future. The button inbetween returns you to today's view. The button to the right of this shows a mini-calendar to let you quickly jump to any date.

The dropdown box on the right allows you to see a different view of the calendar, such as an agenda or a termly view.

If this calendar has tags, you can use the labelled checkboxes at the top of the page to select just the tags you wish to view, and then click "Show selected". The calendar will be redisplayed with just the events related to these tags, making it easier to find what you're looking for.

These are the Society鈥檚 premier research awards and the aim of this scheme is to release the best leading researchers from teaching and administration allowing them to focus on research.

Am I eligible to apply?

This scheme is open to world-class researchers (scientists and engineers) of outstanding achievement.

Research must be within the of natural sciences, which includes but is not limited to biological research, chemistry, engineering, mathematics and physics. The Royal Society does not cover clinical medicine (such as patient orientated research and clinical trials), social sciences or humanities, other than when working in partnership with organisations.

The scheme is open to applicants of all nationalities; applications are particularly welcomed from internationally renowned researchers currently residing outside of the UK. Royal Society Research Professors requiring a visa to work in the UK are eligible for the Research and Innovation Talent Visa, i.e. the Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa, under the accelerated process of endorsement. Other visa routes are available. Further details can be found on the Society's .

Before applying, please ensure that you meet all the eligibility requirements which are explained in the scheme notes.

What is the scheme鈥檚 value and tenure?

Research Professors are appointed for up to 10 years: five years in the first instance with the opportunity to renew the professorship for a further five years subject to satisfactory progress.

The scheme provides funding for:

  • Contribution to the award holder's salary: contribution of 拢83,334 per year, which can be supplemented at the discretion of the host organisation
  • Research assistance: 80% of the full economic cost of a PDRA
  • Research expenses: consumables, equipment and travel costs. This can include a contribution to a four year PhD studentship
    - Up to 拢100,000 per year until 2021
    - Start up costs of up to 拢200,000 in financial years 2019/20 and 2020/21
    - Up to 拢16,000 per year for financial years 2021/22 onwards

There will be seven awards available including six Royal Society Research Professorships supported through the 鈥淩esearch Talent Fund鈥 as well as the Royal Society Noreen Murray Research Professorship restricted to research in neurological sciences (specifically, neurobiology).

The British Council, under the Newton Fund, invites proposals for its researcher links workshop grants for the UK, Brazil and Jordan. These support workshops bringing together a bilateral cohort of early-career researchers from the UK, Brazil and Jordan that support research areas relevant to the development of the partner countries. The purpose is to contribute to the economic development and social welfare of low- and middle-income countries, benefiting low income and vulnerable populations in these countries. All proposals must demonstrate a plausible pathway showing how research may lead to a positive impact on these populations within a timeframe of three to 15 years. Workshops may focus on a specific research area or an interdisciplinary theme. Proposals in any discipline or multidisciplinary area are supported, including the natural and social sciences, arts and humanities, however, the following areas are prioritised:

鈥驳谤颈肠耻濒迟耻谤别;

鈥limate and environment;

鈥ustainable energy for all;

鈥ducation research for development;

鈥conomic growth;

鈥别补濒迟丑;

鈥ater and sanitation;

鈥ood and nutrition;

鈥emographic change and migration;

鈥ural and urban development;

鈥苍蹿谤补蝉迟谤耻肠迟耻谤别;

鈥umanitarian disasters and emergencies, disaster risk reduction;

鈥esilient and connected communities;

鈥overnance, society and conflict;

鈥evelopment-relevant data collection, quality and access.

Each proposal must have one principal applicant from the UK and one from a partner country. Principal applicants must be permanent employees of a non-profit HEI, a UK HEI, a non-profit research organisation or a catapult centre. There is no limit to the number of applications per institution. For-profit organisations may participate but cannot receive funding. Workshops are expected to take place in the partner country, but may be held in the UK if justified. UK institutions can partner with institutions affiliated to other UK institutions, such as an overseas campus, to deliver the workshop if they also include other eligible HEIs or research organisations in the partner country. Principal applicants may identify up to four leading or established researchers to act as mentors, two from each country. The remaining participants must be researchers at an earlier stage in their career.
