Some of the research of the Cell Biophysics Group will be described that indicates how technologies rooted in surface and spectroscopic physics have made an impact on problems within cell biology. These tools are also of use to the Pharmaceutical industry. Further work will be described that shows how some problems within life sciences are difficult to solve because of shortcomings in technology with some examples of possible solutions. This presentation will then outline how problems in the life sciences can only be tackled using approaches that are more familiar to Physicists than Biologists. They will be exemplified by outlining how new physical 聭rules聮 must be 聭out there聮 awaiting discovery聟. Biology will change physics just as biology is being changed by physics
