"Geological Disposal – The UK鈥檚 largest Environmental Protection Project鈥�
Since the 1950鈥檚, radioactive waste has been generated and is currently safely stored at a number of nuclear sites around the UK. Radioactive Waste Management Ltd. (RWM)鈥檚 mission is to deliver a permanent solution to the safe disposal of these materials, through the siting and construction of a Geological Disposal Facility or 鈥楪DF鈥�. This lecture explores the history of radioactive waste generation in the UK, the process of finding a suitable site for such a facility and the vital role of science and technology in underpinning the safety of this major infrastructure project.
