The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council invites applications for its future manufacturing hub in manufacture using advanced powder processes feasibility studies. This supports research which closely aligns with the hub鈥檚 core research programme, namely powders by design and process by design, and has the potential to lead to further collaboration and funding bids. The hub鈥檚 research agenda covers emerging powder-based manufacturing technologies, including spark plasma sintering, freeze casting, inkjet printing, layer-by-layer manufacture, hot isostatic pressing, and laser, electron beam, and indirect additive manufacturing. Proposals may address the following themes:
鈥owders by design – new characterisation methods which support the systems level approach to describing powder behaviour in processes, modification of powder properties such as chemistry, shape and size, to improve processing and final component properties;
鈥rocess by design – new approaches to metrology that offer new process understanding or opportunity for real-time inprocess monitoring, new approaches to process modelling, taking advantage of the abundance of in-process data and data across the manufacturing supply chain, new approaches to optimisation and control, taking advantage of advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence.
This call is open to all UK academic institutions where applicants must be eligible to hold an EPSRC grant. Investigators at existing MAPP hub and spoke institutions may apply, however all applications must include at least one institution which is not a MAPP partner.
Four awards, worth up to 拢50,000 at 80 per cent full economic cost, are available for up to six months.
