¹⁰B is unique among NMR active nuclei in having a large integer nuclear spin of 3.  In borates, this spin state and a strong quadrupolar interaction lead to broad and richly detailed static NMR spectra exceeding 1 MHz in width (compared to 4 kHz for MAS NMR ¹¹B spectra).  This level of detail allows us to extract the distribution widths of the quadrupolar parameters in glasses and crystals. The importance of this is that it can give a measure of the extent of the disorder in glass and how it depends on thermal history. We show that there is a measurable change in “glassiness” in three boron oxide glass samples made over a range of 10⁸ times change in cooling rate.   Best fit quadrupole parameters were determined using a newly developed automatic fitting program that minimises the residuals between experiment and theory.
