10B is unique among NMR active nuclei in having a large integer nuclear spin of 3.  In borates, this spin state and a strong quadrupolar interaction lead to broad and richly detailed static NMR spectra exceeding 1 MHz in width (compared to 4 kHz for MAS NMR 11B spectra).  This level of detail allows us to extract the distribution widths of the quadrupolar parameters in glasses and crystals. The importance of this is that it can give a measure of the extent of the disorder in glass and how it depends on thermal history. We show that there is a measurable change in “glassiness” in three boron oxide glass samples made over a range of 108 times change in cooling rate.   Best fit quadrupole parameters were determined using a newly developed automatic fitting program that minimises the residuals between experiment and theory.
