DCS Seminar - Paul Hammond (Yahoo/Flickr)
Abstract:
Flickr is one of the worlds largest websites, currently serving over
a billion photos to over 40 million unique users a month, and growing
daily.
Behind the scenes, flickr is built on a large number of commodity
servers running open source software, including apache, php, mysql
and memcached, along with some proprietary code. We'll look at how
these components are combined to ensure the scalability, high
availability and performance requirements of the site are met without
over-inflating operational costs or increasing the development times
for new features.
We'll also discuss how flickr compares to the architectures of other
large scale websites and how it might differ from traditional
academic best practices, and possible future areas of research in
this area.
