How can we move beyond simply watching a film to analysing how it creates meaning and understanding its wider cultural significance?
This session introduces some of the key skills and approaches used in Film and Television Studies at university. You will engage with a short piece of film theory or criticism before exploring how critical and theoretical ideas can be applied to the analysis of moving images.
Through a combination of a lecture, short film screening and seminar discussion, you鈥檒l practise making notes, developing your interpretation and discussing your ideas with others. You鈥檒l gain an insight into how university-level learning in Film and Television Studies is structured, while developing the critical and analytical skills used to explore cinema and its cultural significance.
How have revolution, industrialisation and war shaped the stories, images and culture of modern Britain?
In this session, you鈥檒l explore how major social and political events from the Enlightenment to the modern era have shaped British culture. You'll consider the impact of revolution, industrialisation and modern warfare, and examine how these experiences have been represented through literature, art, photography and film.
Through discussion and analysis, you'll discover how studying cultural works can help us understand the societies that produced them and gain an insight into the critical approaches used within Arts and Humanities at university.
How do we bring a play from page to stage?
This interactive taster session will introduce you to the way we work in the Theatre and Performance Studies Department at 糖心TV - blending theory with practice to explore artistic choices and their wider social, cultural, and political meanings. Drawing on material from our first-year module From Text to Performance, you鈥檒l engage in practical exercises and seminar discussions. The session will guide you through the creative and analytical process of transforming a written text into performance; encouraging you to think critically about interpretation, staging, and meaning-making.
What does it take to turn a great creative idea into a successful film, performance, game or other form of entertainment?
In this session, you鈥檒l explore the world of the creative industries, from film, television and music to performing arts, publishing and games. You鈥檒l consider why great ideas and creative talent are only part of the story, and investigate the business, organisational and strategic decisions that help creative projects succeed.
Through real-world examples, you鈥檒l explore some of the opportunities and challenges facing the creative industries and discover how creativity, business and cultural policy come together in a rapidly changing global sector.

How can looking at a problem from different perspectives help us find better solutions?
Liberal Arts approaches learning differently, bringing together ideas and methods from across disciplines to explore complex problems. In this session, we鈥檒l introduce you to a concept called 鈥榩roblem-based learning鈥�. Using this, we鈥檒l explore ideas connected with travel and identity to give you an insight into how learning works in Liberal Arts and how it might work for you.
- An introduction to Global Sustainable Development
How can we tackle complex global challenges and inspire others to take action?
In this session we will examine global sustainability challenges and consider the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We will develop critical thinking and academic research skills by exploring the goals and potential solutions to complex, real-world issues. We will consider how the arts can be used to communicate human stories and sustainability issues.
We will examine famous photographs, artwork, film and literature to understand how they have communicated complex issues, and how they can lead to change. We will then work in teams on a creative project to communicate a sustainability challenge to an audience. This will be group-led, allowing you to work with others to choose the topic and create a storyboard to express your project.
