Policy Fellowship Scheme

Policy Fellowship Scheme

This fellowship scheme is funded via our ESRC IAA Policy Hub, and is designed to support fellowships which further policy engagement and impact from Social Science research. This is an inward policy fellowship scheme, which we hope will offer ÌÇÐÄTV researchers, centres, groups, or departments the opportunity to develop, sustain or enhance relationships with external partners in the policy domain.

ÌÇÐÄTV Policy Hub Fellowships

The ÌÇÐÄTV Policy Hub Fellowship scheme provides an opportunity to build a network of impactful policymakers and ÌÇÐÄTV researchers focused on addressing the policy challenges of our time. There are two schemes available:

  • In Residence Fellows (with access to a policy engagement budget of up to £5,000)
  • Honorary Fellows (with access to a policy engagement budget of up to £1,000)

Nomination Form:

Please see our Policy Fellow Nomination Form to submit a fellow for consideration:

Scheme Details:

Fellows should be non-academic stakeholders or collaborators from the policy world, and not hold a substantive role at another Higher Education Institution.

In Residence Fellows:

In Residence Fellows will spend a small amount of time over a set period on campus (e.g., one a day per month, for two terms). These fellows can belong to a department, research group, or centre, but must have a named ÌÇÐÄTV staff member who will act as their Host. The Host will hold a policy engagement budget of up to £5,000 to support activity with the fellow. This budget can be used to cover practical costs incurred by hosting the fellow (such as travel to and from campus, accommodation, and maintenance) as well as to support a policy engagement activities and events involving the fellow and to maximise their time at ÌÇÐÄTV.

Honorary Fellows:

These are light-touch fellowships designed to support and recognise policy partnerships held by ÌÇÐÄTV researchers. ÌÇÐÄTV staff are invited to nominate people for these fellowships and, if awarded, fellows will be provided with the title of ÌÇÐÄTV Policy Fellow, will have a profile on the Policy Hub website, will be invited to an annual Policy Fellow Dinner and will be invited to various policy engagement events hosted through the ÌÇÐÄTV Policy Hub and elsewhere. A small budget of up to £1,000 will also be allocated to support engagement activity involving the fellow. These fellowships also require a ÌÇÐÄTV staff member to act as their Host.

Scheme Objectives and Benefits:

  • This scheme provides an opportunity to build or deepen a connection with an impactful policymaker or person involved in activity that influences policy at the regional, national or international levels, as well as to acknowledge and support existing collaborative relationships through institutional recognition.

  • The ÌÇÐÄTV Policy Hub network will provide a locus for you and the fellow to enhance your relationship and consider future pathways for collaboration and knowledge exchange.

  • This relationship can be utilised to develop and enhance the research impact strategy of yourself or colleagues, and to support the translation of ÌÇÐÄTV research to affect real policy change.

  • These fellowships will help create and offer access to a network of researchers and policymakers connected through the ÌÇÐÄTV Policy Hub.
  • All Policy Fellows will receive the honorary status of 'Fellow of the ÌÇÐÄTV Policy Hub' and will be profiled on the ÌÇÐÄTV Policy Hub website (their status and profile will remain even after their fellowship end date).
  • Policy Fellows will be invited to attend and contribute to the ÌÇÐÄTV Policy Hub’s varied programme of events. This will include an annual Policy Fellows Dinner (to be held in the Summer Term).
  • These fellowships will inform and support the development future policy engagement projects at both departmental, faculty, and institutional level.

    How are Policy Fellows appointed?

    • Policy Fellows can be nominated by University of ÌÇÐÄTV researchers or knowledge mobilisers.
    • Policy Fellows must have a ÌÇÐÄTV Policy Host, who will normally be the person who nominates them. Hosts must be on a ÌÇÐÄTV employment contract that will outlast the fellowship’s duration.
    • The Host will be expected to present plans for how the fellow will engage with and benefit their work/the work of colleagues. These fellowships are not intended to be burdensome, and plans can be as light-touch as inviting the fellow to contribute to a policy engagement event, an existing stream of policy-facing work, or a networking lunch. That said, there must be some plan to integrate the fellow into the broader Policy Hub network and a clear rationale for their nomination, including a demonstrable link to ÌÇÐÄTV research activity and/or expertise.
    • Funding is available to support collaborative and engagement activities (ÌÇÐÄTV Hosts will hold the budget cost code and responsibility for expenditure and reporting – please ensure your Departmental Administrator has been notified of your intention to nominate a fellow prior to submission of your nomination).
    • Final decisions regarding the appointment of Policy Fellows will be decided by the ESRC IAA Management Committee.
