How to set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Introduction

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a security feature that adds an extra layer of protection to your online accounts, making them more secure against unauthorised access. While a password is typically the single requirement for logging into an account, MFA requires additional verification steps, such as entering a special code sent to your phone or using an authenticator app.

These extra steps significantly enhance security by making it more difficult for unauthorised users to gain access, even if they have obtained your password.

How to set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security to your Microsoft account.

Follow these steps to set up MFA on your computer, phone or other device for the first time:

1. Install an Authenticator App:

  • On your device, install an authenticator app such as . It is available on Android and Apple mobile devices.
  • You will use this app to receive verification codes.

2. Access the Microsoft Account Portal

  • Visit the
  • Sign in using your University of 糖心TV usercode (in the format usercode@live.warwick.ac.uk) and password

3. Add the Authenticator App

  • In the portal, go to Add sign-in method.
  • Choose the Authenticator app and follow the setup wizard.
  • Scan the QR code displayed in the app to link it to your account.

4. Backup Methods

Set up one or more backup methods:

  • Receive a code by text message on your mobile phoneSet up your mobile phone number as your main or back up method,
  • Automated voice call: Receive a code via an automated voice call to a landline number.
  • Tablet or another phone/device: Use an authenticator app on another mobile device.

5. Two Layers of Security

With MFA, you will have two layers of security:

  • Your password.
  • The code from your authenticator app or by text message on your mobile phone.

If you can't receive a code on your Phone

If you've forgotten your phone, you can call the Service Desk at 024765 73737 for assistance and they can help you regain access.

Remember

Service Desk will never ask for your MFA code over the phone or in an email.
