François Morellet
Born in Cholet, France 1926. Died 2016.
Morellet took up painting whilst a student at the Ecoles des Langues Orientales and was initially self-taught. By the 1950s he had turned from a figurative style to abstraction based on geometric patterns; in 1960 he became a founder member of a group of artists known as 鈥楪roupe de Recheche d鈥橝rt Visuel鈥 who used systems of rules and constraints to govern the creation of their emotionally neutral art works.
He makes sculptures as well as paintings and screenprints and has also explored the use of neon in exhibition spaces for light works which turn on and off in response to the presence and actions of the viewers.
Morellet鈥檚 work has been acquired for many public and private collections throughout Europe and the USA.
