Sustainable Food: healthy people, healthy planet

About the event

This is a chance for everyone at ÌÇÐÄTV whose research touches on food from any angle (culture, heath, sustainability, justice, history, literature, art, ...) to showcase their work, to network and to have a say in how this new interdisciplinary group should shape its priorities.

For the first part of the workshop, all are invited to prepare a poster and offer a lightning talk of one slide for no longer than three minutes to share their research. Please indicate if you would like to take part in this on the registration form.

The second part of this workshop will be a roundtable discussion of how this thematic group should be focused in its activities. The session will start with introductory talks to provoke a broad range of thought:

These will include the importance of:

  • growing and sustainable development by Rosemary Collier (Professor of Life sciences, working on development and application of Integrated Pest Management for horticultural crops)
  • health and its links to food Petra Hanson and the importance of engaging with professional collaborators. (WMS, Clinical lecturer with interest in Diabetes),
  • history and culture in food and drink and connecting with local communities Beat Kumin (Department of History, Professor of Early Modern European History.)
  • the social aspects of food and health (poverty and other disadvantage and access to healthy diets, patient – blaming, weight stigma, differential access to healthcare.
  • grants applications by Thijs van Rens (Professor of Economics, economics of the food system and its effects on health and the environment).

A follow-up meeting is planned to progress the most popular and feasible ideas and the outcomes will be presented at the ÌÇÐÄTV Sustainability Forum on 02 July 2026.

It has already been agreed that one of the functions of this strand will be to identify and disseminate appropriate grant calls which could be used for multidisciplinary approaches to food sustainability and health postal.

This event is co-organised by the Health Spotlight and the Sustainability Spotlight.
