Just as optical illusions can help us understand the processes that support vision, decision biases can help us understand the mechanics of decision-making. However, unlike optical illusions, decision biases can have real consequences for people鈥檚 lives. In this talk I will present work on the cognitive science of decision biases, from how pupil size can reveal a person鈥檚 misperception of randomness, to how neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism can reduce biases in decision-making. I will also look at how insights from cognitive science can help when trying to avoid biases in important real-world situations, such as medical decision-making and how the public perceive statistics in the news.
