Mental accounting and taxpayers’ choice
Contrary to the normative predictions that people will consume now and pay later to minimise the present value of costs, studies exploring consumers’ financing behaviour show that individuals prefer private costs to either precede or occur at the same time as the benefits. It is likely that similar preferences exist for financing public expenditure. In this discussion I will present preliminary results of an online experiment exploring how taxpayers want government agencies to make financing decisions on their behalf.

Behavioural consequences of regret: A novel approach
Classic models of learning do not consider the role of cognitive based emotions such as regret in decision making. The potential influence of this emotion has been habitually studied using methods involving introspection. We propose a new methodology that measures regret based on behavioural consequences, by observing the trade-off between rewards actually received and feelings of regret. This methodology could be useful to explore regret in non-linguistic participants where introspection is not possible.
