Randomly Selected Representatives
Random selection procedures are one way of appointing representatives to decision making bodies. Such procedures are applied today, e.g., for the selection of jury members, and were used in former times for political governance, most notably in ancient Athens and in the medieval Italian republics. In this discussion, Hossam Zeitoun will first talk about conceptual considerations related to random selection procedures, with applications to the governance of organizations. Then he will present preliminary results of a lab experiment, investigating the consequences of random selection procedures under stylized circumstances. It is suggested that further empirical research can help assess the advantages and disadvantages of random selection procedures under different empirical settings.
