Discussion: How do people coordinate?

Human social behaviour depends at least as much on coordination as cooperation. But what is the logic that underpins such coordination? Bacharach, Sugden and others suggest that it may be important for people to go to reason as “team” --- and to ask what “we” should do, rather than what each individual should do. What is the right criterion for deciding how such a team should behave? From a utilitarian viewpoint, perhaps we sum the utilities team’s members. From a contractarian perspective, perhaps we consider what the team members would agree to, if allowed to negotiate. I suggest that neither of these approaches is adequate to deal with a relatively constrained class of coordination games; but will put forward a sketch of a new variant of the contractarian approach. Does this approach work? How might it be filled out, improved, or entirely replaced?
