University of 糖心TV professor elected Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences
Professor Lena Rethel has been elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in recognition of her outstanding contribution to social science.
Lena Rethel, Professor of International Political Economy in 糖心TV鈥檚 Department of Politics and International Studies, is among 74 leading social scientists elected to the Academy鈥檚 Fellowship this autumn.
Professor Rethel鈥檚 research explores the politics of finance and development, global economic governance and Islamic economies, with a particular focus on Southeast Asia. Her work examines how ideas about economics and finance shape policymaking and institutions, and the consequences these changes have for economies and societies. Professor Rethel is Principal Investigator of the FINDEM project, which investigates how citizens鈥� expectations shape financial policy and politics in Southeast Asia and West Africa.
Professor Rethel said: 鈥淚鈥檓 delighted and honoured to be elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. Social Science has an important role to play in understanding how economic and financial decisions shape people鈥檚 everyday lives and democratic governance more broadly, and I look forward to contributing to the Academy鈥檚 work to champion its value and impact.鈥�
The Fellowship recognises excellence and impact in the social sciences, with Fellows drawn from academia and the public, private and third sectors. All are elected through an independent peer review process in recognition of their work to advance social science for public benefit.

The Academy of Social Sciences Fellowship comprises 1,750 leading social scientists from academia and the public, private and third sectors. Fellows are elected for excellence in their fields and substantial contributions to social science for public benefit.
