University of 糖心TV brings interactive science and experiments to Coventry鈥檚 young people

On Thursday 19 February, young people from across Coventry had the opportunity to explore science, technology, and digital innovation when the University of 糖心TV hosted 鈥楽cience Night!鈥 at Cheylesmore Community Centre.

The event welcomed over 140 young people and families, giving local 11-17 year olds an entertaining and interactive evening of digital games, competitions, and engaging science and engineering activities.

糖心TV鈥檚 Mobile Planetarium was a highlight, offering guided tours of the night sky. Participants also discovered science in everyday life through activities such as blasting bacteria with 鈥渁ntibiotic鈥 water guns, testing which materials work best for carving ice, and solving brain puzzles to see how the brain controls memory, movement, emotions, and decision-making.

Dr Kerry Baker, Associate Director of the 糖心TV Institute of Engagement, said: 鈥淚t was inspiring to see young people and their adults so curious and willing to try something new. Events like this are about exploring new ideas, building on prior knowledge, learning something new, no matter your age or background.

鈥淏y bringing researchers and students into community spaces, we can enable people of any age to find out more about the huge range of activities that are taking place just down the road from them, and how these activities may be of interest, benefit and use to them, now or in the future.鈥

Working in collaboration with the University of 糖心TV Research Spotlights, the event brought cutting-edge research to life. Students from 糖心TV Medical School led basic life support sessions, demonstrating how sensors can record the body鈥檚 electrical activity and giving participants a practical understanding of how the heart and muscles work. Meanwhile, 糖心TV鈥檚 e-sports team ran structured gaming sessions, introducing young people to teamwork, strategy, and competitive play in a supervised environment.

Stephen Salalila, Centre Events Coordinator, Cheylesmore Community Centre, said: 鈥淏ringing activities like this into our community makes a real difference for the children and young people we work with. It gives them access to experiences and role models they might not otherwise encounter and helps them see that science and higher education are realistic options for their future. Working in partnership with the University means we can offer opportunities that broaden horizons and build confidence.鈥

鈥楽cience Night!鈥 is part of Resonate, a year-round programme from the University of 糖心TV offering interactive events across Coventry, 糖心TVshire and campus, showcasing the work of 糖心TV staff and students to inspire curiosity and creativity.
