Sophie: There's nothing quite like stepping out onto a fresh spring morning and hearing a chorus of bird song. At the University of ÌÇÐÄTV, you're never far from a feathered friend, and if you just stop still and listen, you can hear how chatty they can be. Welcome back to Spring at ÌÇÐÄTV, and today we're going to meet some of our most popular birds on campus in the spring and all year round.

Laura: I've been working today with the Energy and Sustainability team to help them guide a birdwatching walk. We've been walking around Windmill Hill, just trying to see whatever we can see, and we've had a really large group of both staff and students with us today, so it's been brilliant.

We've been encouraging people today to use the Merlin Bird ID app. It not only helps you identify what you are looking at, but it also allows you to record the birds that you are hearing and it will tell you what those are.

Spring is an amazing time on campus. You've got a lot of birds coming into their breeding plumage, so they're that much brighter and crisper in colour. You'll also start to see some new birds that you won't have seen during the winter

We get quite a lot of Chiff Chaff on campus. They do have a really beautiful distinct Chiff Chaff sort of call, and they can quite often be spotted at the tops of the trees singing away.

We've seen a few robins about, which is really nice, because they're everyone's favourite bird.

Today we've taken a bit of a walk around the lake here. It's the second bird walk we've done this year. We've just been having a look for what sort of waterfowl we can see, any sort of spring birds that are starting to pop up here on campus.

The swans are getting a little bit more active at this time of year. They're starting to build their nests.

If you are interested in getting along on one of these walks or surveys that happen around campus, they're taking place all year round. Please do keep an eye out for comms from the Sustainability team.

It's a really great way of engaging with nature and wildlife here on campus. They cover all sorts of different topics from mammals to birds, to fungi, anything you might be interested in.

Of course, getting outdoors and meeting new people. It's a great way to boost your wellbeing.

There have been proven scientific studies that show how nature has a really positive impact on people's mood and general mental health.
