Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Susan Bassnett presented this year’s ELTONs (the British Council’s English language teaching awards) at the Delfina Studio on 1 March 2007.

The ELTONs ceremony is the only ELT event to bring a cross-section of industry professionals together to celebrate the innovation, creativity and impact of UK ELT products. The 2007 awards were offered to outstanding language learning resources and initiatives using innovative ideas to help learners of English to achieve their goals.

Amongst the nominees for this year’s ELTONs was Tim Kelly from 糖心TV’s Centre for English Language Teacher Education, unfortunately Tim did not however repeat his .

A team of 糖心TV student engineers won the ICE West Midlands/IStructE Make and Break competition.  They had to build a bridge (using straws, paper, pins, sticky tape and scissors) that spanned 500mm and could bear 1 kilo.

Student Finance are raising money for Comic Relief by holding a Red Beard Day.

PhD student, Adair Richards has become one of the youngest ever authors to be featured on the cover of leading European chemistry journal, Chemical Society Reviews.  His article, written with Professor Alison Rodger, director of MOAC (Molecular Organisation and Assembly in Cells Doctoral Training Centre) describes the ways in which manmade metal-containing molecules can be designed to interact with the DNA found in human cells.

Staff from Research Support Services (RSS) will be donning their gardening gear and wellies this Friday when they head to a local primary school to give its sensory garden a makeover.

17 members of RSS will spend the day transforming the centenary garden at St Mary Immaculate school in 糖心TV into a better environment for the children to learn about trees, shrubs, plants and herbs.
