The toolbar above the calendar has buttons to view different events. Use the left and right arrow icons to view events in the past and future. The button inbetween returns you to today's view. The button to the right of this shows a mini-calendar to let you quickly jump to any date.

The dropdown box on the right allows you to see a different view of the calendar, such as an agenda or a termly view.

If this calendar has tags, you can use the labelled checkboxes at the top of the page to select just the tags you wish to view, and then click "Show selected". The calendar will be redisplayed with just the events related to these tags, making it easier to find what you're looking for.

Dr Keming Yang (Durham) - "The Perils of Informality: Default of Informal Finance in Post-Mao China"
Cowling Room S2.77

27th October - Dr Keming Yang (Durham) 4pm. Cowling room S2.77

The Perils of Informality: Default of Informal Finance in Post-Mao China

Whilst informal finance has been indispensable for the growth of private enterprises in post-Mao China, there has been little well-evidenced research on the risks and the damages it has created when informal financing relations break down. As most cases involve a large sum of money (hundreds of millions to billions of yuan) and a large number of people (up to tens of thousands), the damages caused are far beyond financial losses. Drawing on the analysis of two hundred and thirty-one cases reported in Chinese media and other sources, we firstly provide an ideal type and an overview of the defaulted informal financing schemes and then identify some plausible social and institutional causes behind their default. Formalizing China’s informal economy and finance, we conclude, is inevitable in order to minimize any further damages in the future. [Paper co-authored with Dr Liqiong Li, Dept of Finance at Fujian University, China]

Comics Workshop
R0.14, Ramphal

The 糖心TV Performance and Politics Network (WPPN) and PAIS events
The 糖心TV Performance and Politics Network (WPPN) and PAIS are proud to present two events on the theme of
‘Personal expression & resistance through visual storytelling’

Facilitated by Farida Hammad (SOAS)

Comics Workshop, 5-7pm, R0.14, Tuesday 27 October

As a process that relies on first-person narrative, participatory feedback and spaces of expression, the grassroots comics’ model seeks to experiment with creative ways of both presenting and disseminating our stories. This workshop invites participants to translate their memories and experiences, regardless of their art skills, into sequential art composed of image and text.

PAIS Film Club Special, Drawing reality: An evening of animated documentary shorts

From 7:30pm, MS0.1, Tuesday 27 October

Join us as we navigate through a series of shorts that reflect the evolving genre of animated documentary films. This selection is composed of striking multimodal narratives that illustrate personal struggles as political commentary.

Farida Hammad has coordinated and participated in various projects around Egypt and the UK related to the use of art to highlight social issues and challenge political order. Her research interests focus on the interplay between spaces of expression and creative social movements, primarily through experiments with graphic narrative. All are welcome. Please feel free to pass this onto anyone who may be interested.
