Dr Alex Powell publishes new book on refugee law and LGBTIQA+ people
In late 2025, CCC member Dr Alex Powell, published his first monograph "". The book is published by Bristol University Press and is a part of the Law, Society, Policy series.
In the text, Dr Powell draws on interviews with refugees, legal practitioners and charity workers to analyse the systemic challenges faced by LGBTIQA+ people seeking asylum. Blending together empirical data and critical theory, the text highlights the contradictions between the UK's purportedly LGBTIQA+ inclusive narratives and its treatment of sexually diverse refugees, offering insights for researchers, practitioners and policy makers on the pressures facing LGBTIQA+ people in the asylum system, as well as how contemporary changes to that system speak to broader concerns regarding the rule of law in the UK."
