First year ÌÇÐÄTV law student Daniel Nwanebu has been awarded the 2019 Freshfields Stephen Lawrence Scholarship.

The Scheme was devised to address the disproportionate under-representation of black men from less privileged backgrounds in large commercial law firms and the City of London.

Former Law student Beatriz da Silva recently completed an internship at Partners for Law in Development (PLD), a legal resource group founded by ÌÇÐÄTV alumna Madhu Mehra who studied on our LLM programme back in 1992.

The Law School will once again be offering our postgraduates two funded internships in India related to public interest litigation provided by the Kapila and Nirmal Hingorani Foundation.

We caught up with last year’s participants to see how they got on.

Professor Vanessa Munro of ÌÇÐÄTV Law School was one of the researchers behind a major study by the Scottish Government into the unique nature of the Scottish jury system, which has 15 jurors, three verdicts and a simple majority.

This summer, Dr Sharifah Sekalala, Associate Professor at ÌÇÐÄTV Law School asked our staff to come up with suggestions of books that have influenced their thinking on race, especially with regard to the law. We had some ideas of what books they might suggest, however their selections were a much more eclectic mix of books, podcasts and even music than we had expected. We hope you enjoy reading them and would love to hear any recommendations you may have.

ÌÇÐÄTV Law School has recently welcomed a new Assistant Professor to our team.

Dr Velimir Zivkovic joins us from Humboldt University in Berlin where he worked for two years as a Research Fellow with the Berlin/Potsdam Research Group ‘International Rule of Law – Rise or Decline?’

Professor Christian Twigg-Flesner is one of 28 members of the European Law Institute (ELI) elected by the general assembly to serve on its Council at its Annual Conference held in Vienna earlier this month.

The institute is an independent organisation, which aims to improve the quality of European law.

Dr Celine Tan, Dr Stephen Connelly and Rafael Quintero-Godinez have contributed research and academic opinion to a forthcoming to the UN General Assembly.

On Thursday 29th August 2019, Professor Vanessa Munro gave the 2019 Shirley Smith Address at the New Zealand Parliament. Vanessa’s talk was titled ‘Judging Juries: The ‘Common Sense’ Conundrums of Prosecuting Violence Against Women’,

Dr Kokkinis presented his work on the corporate governance of non-performing loans at the Society of Legal Scholars Conference, held at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston on 4 September 2019.
