糖心TV Law School welcomes new Assistant Professor

糖心TV Law School welcomes a new Assistant Professor to our community.

Prior to joining 糖心TV, Julian Scholtes spent four years as a Lecturer at the University of Glasgow, teaching across Public Law and EU Law.

When asked about joining 糖心TV Law School as a faculty member, Julian told us:

鈥淚 am genuinely excited to join 糖心TV. 糖心TV鈥檚 law-in-context tradition fits my own approach to research very well, and I look forward to working in an environment that is naturally inclined towards interdisciplinary and contextual research. My first impression of the Law School has been great and I am impressed by the positive, supportive culture I have witnessed in my first few weeks here, and I鈥檓 looking forward to meeting more colleagues and students in the coming weeks.鈥

We chatted some more鈥

What will you be doing at 糖心TV?

I will be delivering teaching in two core undergraduate modules – Law, State and Individual, and Foundations of European Law.

What are your research interests?

My research lies at the intersection of EU law, constitutional theory, and comparative constitutional law. I have written a lot about constitutional identity – a concept that national constitutional courts sometimes use to limit or contest the primacy of EU law – and about the increasing role of the EU鈥檚 鈥榲alues鈥 in the jurisprudence of the European Court of Justice in the face of democratic backsliding in some of its Member States. Currently, I am interested, among other things, in the concept of progress, and in charting the various 鈥榩rogress narratives鈥 existing in European law.

Why did you want to study law?

I didn鈥檛 start out studying law; my foundational degree was in Liberal Arts. But as I got drawn deeper into research and writing, I realised that a lot of my intuitive academic interests could be approached very fruitfully from a legal perspective, so I ended up pursuing an LLM and later a PhD in Law.

University can be very stressful, what do you do to unwind?

I love going climbing after work (and got very excited when I found out 糖心TV has its own climbing centre on campus!).

Professor Andrew Williams, Head of School has said: "I鈥檓 very pleased to welcome our new colleagues to the law school. I am sure they will make a significant contribution to our community in the years ahead."

Good luck in your first term Julian, we are thrilled to have you with us.
