Title: 'Consumer Law without the consumer? AI Agents, and humans-in-or-out-of-the-loop'

Abstract: 'As AI dominates policy and legal debates, the focus is increasingly turning to AI Agents, i.e., applications built on AI that can automate actions typically undertaken by humans. Unlike robotic automation, which mostly replaced or supplemented mechanical actions, AI agents seek to replace humans in important decision-making processes. Consumer-focused AI agents are a key example: several of these have started to appear (e.g., Muse), but early reports suggest that they suffer from reliability problems. The basic idea of AI agents seems attractive, but it raises questions as to what exactly the implications would be for human consumers to step back from taking decisions themselves that can affect their economic interests and privacy. This paper focuses on the implications of taking human consumers out of the decision-making loop and considers the implications for consumer law, as well as for human consumers who wish to remain in the loop. Although the focus is on consumer law, the issues discussed are of wider relevance to AI-driven automation'
