Effective Altruism Society 糖心TV welcomes Professor Alan Fenwick OBE, director of SCI (Schistosomiasis Control Initiative) at Imperial College London to present on the organisation's progress towards eliminating neglected tropical diseases.
Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) such as Schistosomiasis and Hookworm thrive among the poorest populations on earth and are responsible for a range of serious health problems from malnutrition, to impaired cognitive development, to blindness. They can increase the morbidity and mortality of malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, and infected children are often too sick to attend school. SCI works with governments to create or scale up mass school-based deworming programs..., which have a strong track record of success. These programs provide school children with pills that protect against the most prevalent NTDs. SCI is recognised by both GiveWell and Giving What We Can as one of the most cost-effective charities in the world.
