Dr Monca Ciomaga Hatnean
I worked firstly as a Research Fellow and then as a Research Focused Assistant Professor (previously called Senior Research Fellow) in the Superconductivity and Magnetism Group, from January 2013 to August 2021. I have extensive expertise in materials synthesis, crystal growth and materials characterisation techniques.
Overview of my research work
My research work involved the crystal growth and study of single crystals of various compounds (oxides, borides, chalcogenides and intermetallic magnetic and superconducting materials). The materials that I studied have a wide range of physical properties, from multiferroics and frustrated magnets to a variety of newly discovered exotic states of matter (Topological Insulators, Skyrmion lattices).
The investigation of the physics of all the materials that I produced at 糖心TV involved a wide range of techniques, including in house magnetic, thermodynamic and transport measurements, as well as the use of central facilities using X-ray diffraction, neutron scattering and muon spectroscopy techniques.
My research profile
From June 2018 to August 2021, I worked as a Research Focused Assistant Professor (previously called Senior Research Fellow) in the Superconductivity and Magnetism group. I initially joined the research group as a Post Doctoral Research Fellow in January 2013, working jointly with Prof. Dr Geetha Balakrishnan, Prof. Dr Don McK. Paul, Dr Martin R. Lees and Dr Oleg A. Petrenko on various research projects.
I have previously completed a PhD in Chemistry at Paris-Sud University, Orsay, France in December 2012, under the joint supervision of Prof. Dr Loreynne Pinsard-Gaudart and Dr Habil. Sylvain Petit. I worked on the at and .
Research interests/highlights and expertise
-
Study of newly discovered states of matter, such as superconductors, topological insulators, skyrmion lattices. My contributions include growth and characterisation of single crystals of topological and Kondo insulators, SmB6, Sm1鈭抶CexB6, YbB12 and FeSi, superconductors, PdBix (x = 1 and 2) and Ru7B3, materials which exhibit a skyrmion lattice, Cu2OSeO3, GaV4S8 and Co10鈭xZn10鈭yMnx+y.
-
Study of magnetic materials, and in particular systems that exhibit puzzling magnetic behaviours. My contributions include the growth by the floating zone method of single crystals of rare earth zirconate, titanate and hafnate oxides, R2M2O7 (M = Zr, Ti, and Hf), garnets (Yb3Ga5O12), rare earth tetraborides and hexaborides, RB4 and RB6.
-
Study of layered metal chalcogenides with various physical properties, such as semiconductors, superconductors. My contributions include growth and characterisation of single crystals of the 2D ferromagnet Cr2Ge2Te6, Mn3Si2Te6 and the transition metal dichalcogenide VSe2.
-
Study of the correlation between crystallographic structures and the physical properties of materials, from the investigation of polymorphism and phase transitions to design of materials in order to tune/enhance their properties. My contribution includes the growth by floating zone method of single crystals of rare earth disilicate compounds, R2Si2O7 (R = Ho, Er, and Tm) and characterisation of the different polymorphs exhibited by these materials.
-
Study of multiferroic compounds and materials that could exhibit magnetoelectric coupling, due to their possible applications in spintronics. My contributions include growth and study of ferromagnets such as R1鈭xSrxMnO3 (R = Pr, Nd), study of the physical properties and spin dynamics by inelastic neutron scattering in single crystals of the candidate magnetoelectric materials, Ga2鈭xFexO3 ferrimagnets.
-
Determination of the crystallographic parameters, magnetic structure and spin dynamics of materials. My expertise in powder and single crystal X-ray and neutron diffraction, as well as inelastic neutron scattering techniques are of great importance for the understanding of the materials studied. I am a confident and advanced user of various software packages used to analyse the data collected.
Teaching
From 2018 to 2021, I have been running the teaching activities associated with the Microprocessors Laboratory, as part of the Physics Skills module for the 2nd year undergraduate students. Details are available on the .

Public Engagement, Outreach and Widening Participation
From 2018 to 2021, I coordinated a science public engagement and outreach programme, entitled 鈥淚t鈥檚 a matter of crystals鈥. As part of this project, I delivered workshops in schools, public libraries and at science events/fairs. The project 鈥It鈥檚 a matter of crystals鈥 aimed to explain the importance of materials research, and particularly, the study of crystals, in daily life. I wished to emphasise the fundamental research interest in the growth of single crystals of materials and to draw attention to the wide range of applications that crystals have in society and economy.
