Teaching Interests

My teaching interests include the supervision of MBio, URSS and final year undergraduate students. I lead and teach the Medical Diagnostics (LF909) and Molecular Cell Biology (LF206) lab and deliver teaching on many undergraduate modules including Virology (LF213), Infection, Biology & Microbiology (LF127), Health and Community (LF131) and Year 2 Virology ( LF213) lab. I am also a personal tutor for year 1, 2 and 3 tutorial groups and the Year 4 and PGT Senior Tutor

Research Interests and Other Activities

Cervical cancer is reported to be the fourth most common cancer worldwide and it accounts for high death rate in many countries. Most cases of cervical cancer are due to infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). Based on their epidemiological association with cervical cancer, HPVs are usually classified into high risk (HR) and low-risk (LR) HPVs with HPV 16 and HPV 18 being the most common high-risk HPVs, whereas HPV 6 and HPV 11 are considered non-carcinogenic types. According to the papillomavirus Nomenclature Committee, HPV variants are those variants differing by up to 2% in the nucleotide sequence of the viral genes compared that of the prototype. Many studies have reported association of some these variants with the development of cervical cancer.

The aims of my research is to study the distribution of HPV 16 variants in women with and without abnormal cytology population and then investigate any association between these variants and the abnormal changes in the cervical cells and the development to cervical cancer using a variety of molecular biology techniques including PCR, DNA sequencing and bioinformatics analysis.
