HetSys PhD Project Proposal
The HetSys PhD project call will open in July 2026. Subsequent recruited students would join in the 27/28 academic year.
PhD projects should align with HetSys鈥� updated key training objectives which are to:
- Embed a culture of robust and sustainable RSE in modelling, to enhance software usability, extend its lifetime and increase its reliability.
- Quantify modelling uncertainties. Promote and expand the use of UQ, enabling students not only to perform simulations, but also to quantitatively assess their reliability.
- Exploit new trends in Scientific Machine Learning (SciML), combining mechanistic & data-driven approaches.
Areas of particular interest for HetSys Cohort 9 are as follows:
- Biomedical systems e.g. to exploit the ongoing revolution from the development of AI-based protein folding methods.

Algorithm development for quantum computing, uncertainty quantification or machine learning, linking the physical and mathematical sciences.

Materials characterisation to link cutting-edge theory with experimental co-supervisors from across the Faculty.
We will also continue to support excellent projects in established HetSys strength areas such as defects in materials, nanofluidics, catalysis, etc.
Key selection criteria is as follows:
- Alignment with HetSys鈥� aims and training provision.
- Engagement with partners, ideally including match funding of 拢67,000.
- Ongoing and/or scope for engagement of supervisor and research group with the HetSys community, e.g. through training or participation in other HetSys activities such as study groups, conferences, seminar series, etc.
Supervisor allocation:
- A maximum of one lead supervisor role per year.
- A maximum of 2 co-supervisor roles per year.
