Professor Xueyu Geng elected Vice President for the Western Europe Region of the International Society of Environmental Geotechnology

Prof Xueyu GengProfessor Xueyu Geng has been elected as the Vice President for the West Europe Region of the "International Society of Environmental Geotechnology (ISEG)" and appointed as a member of the ISEG Council, recognising her outstanding contributions to sustainable geotechnical engineering and environmental geotechnology.

Established in 1986, the International Society of Environmental Geotechnology (ISEG) is an international organisation dedicated to promoting research, education, and collaboration in environmental geotechnology and sustainable geotechnical engineering. The society brings together experts worldwide to address emerging challenges related to sustainable soil improvement, environmental protection, climate resilience, and responsible infrastructure development.

The announcement was made during the 14th International Symposium on Environmental Geotechnology and Global Sustainable Development, held in conjunction with the 2026 Global Geo-Ecosystems and Sustainable Development Symposium (2026 ISEG-GGSD Mega-Symposium). At the symposium, Professor Geng delivered a keynote lecture entitled “Greener Soils, Stronger Ground: From Bio-Based Reinforcement to Soil Fracture Simulation”, presenting her latest research advances in sustainable ground improvement and advanced computational modelling.

Professor Geng’s research focuses on developing greener and more resilient soil systems through the integration of bio-based reinforcement technologies and innovative numerical approaches. In particular, her work applies peridynamics-based numerical simulation to investigate soil fracture behaviour, including crack initiation, propagation, and evolution processes. This approach provides new insights into discontinuous failure mechanisms in geomaterials and enhances understanding of soil stability, durability, and long-term performance. Her research also explores soil self-healing and rehealing processes, contributing to the development of sustainable geotechnical solutions inspired by natural recovery mechanisms.

Professor Geng’s election as Vice President for the Western Europe Region represents international recognition of her research excellence and leadership in advancing sustainable geotechnical engineering. In her new role, she will contribute to strengthening international collaboration, supporting knowledge exchange, and promoting innovative approaches towards greener, safer, and more resilient ground engineering.
