AI in Education: Thinking with conditions

 AI in Education is a Big Question project funded by the Faculty of Social Sciences, led by Siddharth de Souza, Yuxuan Chua, Maria Montero Sierra and Jennie Mills. Over two workshops in March 2026, students, academics, and professional services staff mapped the points where AI is encountered in academic life and used image and text to articulate what a good institutional response might look like. The conversations were sharper, more uncertain, and more interesting than the current discourse around AI in Higher Education tends to allow. Out of that material, the project team has produced a poster campaign — playful, pointed, and intended to open discussions

From the navigation apps on our phones to the climate data that informs national policies and helps monitor protected species, our world is increasingly shaped by the eyes watching us from above. Environmental monitoring satellites are at the heart of what is becoming a ‘Smart Earth’: a planet observed, managed and experienced through smart technologies. But as these technologies create new forms of distance and proximity, how do they transform our capacities to understand, become aware of, engage with and intervene in the environments in which we live?
